“This Is Just to Say” by William Carlos Williams

Here is my choice, a poem by William Carlos Williams that distills poetry to familiar words and situations. I can’t eat a plum without reciting this poem to myself. I can’t eat a warm plum because Williams made refrigerated plums the cold/gold standard. I love the clarity and honesty of this gem. - Joan Digby

This Is Just to Say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold.
